últimas noticias de la compañía sobre How to Select Swivel Joints and Mesh Pulling Grips for Conductor Stringing Operations

Two small accessories decide whether a conductor arrives untwisted and undamaged: the swivel joint that lets the line rotate without passing torque to the conductor, and the pulling grip that connects rope to conductor. Choosing them correctly for each pull is a matter of matching rated load and size to the job. This guide covers swivel joints and pulling grips for conductor stringing.

What Each Part Does

The swivel joint sits between the pulling rope and the grip. It allows the rope to spin without twisting the conductor, protecting both the conductor and the anti-twist rope. The grip — whether a mesh sock or a bolted clamp — holds the conductor firmly without crushing it. Together they form the interface that must never be the weak link.

Match the Swivel to the Tension

Swivel joints are rated by load and defined by outside diameter and weight. Selecting one above the calculated tension, with a diameter that fits the rope and grip, keeps the assembly compact and safe. Two Galaxy swivels show the range:

Parameter SLX-1 SLX-5
Rated load 10 kN 50 kN
Outside diameter 30 mm 42 mm
Weight 0.4 kg 1.5 kg
Material Aluminium —
Application Overhead transmission line Overhead transmission line

Choose the lightest swivel whose rated load comfortably exceeds the pull; a swivel that is overloaded or under-sized for the rope creates its own risk.

Grip Types and Where They Fit

Pulling grips divide into mesh socks and bolted clamps. A mesh grip slides over the conductor and tightens under load, distributing the grip over a long length so the conductor is not crushed; it suits many common conductors. A bolted clamp is used where a firm mechanical grip is needed or where a mesh sock cannot develop enough hold, and it depends on correct tightening to avoid damaging the strands. Whichever type is chosen, its rated load and its conductor size range must both exceed the job's maximum tension and match the conductor being pulled.

Choosing Between a Swivel and a Fixed Joint

Where the line must not rotate, a fixed joint replaces the swivel. Otherwise the swivel is preferred because it removes torque from the conductor and rope. The decision follows the conductor type and whether rotation is acceptable during the pull.

Selection Checklist

  1. Calculate the maximum tension the joint and grip will see.
  2. Select a swivel rated above that tension with margin.
  3. Match the outside diameter to the rope and grip fittings.
  4. Choose a grip type suited to the conductor — mesh sock for many conductors, bolted clamp where a firm grip is needed.
  5. Confirm the grip's rated load exceeds the pull and fits the conductor diameter.
  6. Inspect both parts for wear before every reuse.

For lighter single conductors the 10 kN swivel joint is a compact choice, while the 50 kN 1.5 kg swivel joint covers heavier pulls. Both sit within the wider Transmission Line Accessories range of joints and grips.

FAQ

When should I use a swivel instead of a fixed joint?

Use a swivel whenever the conductor or rope may rotate during the pull. A fixed joint is used only where rotation must be prevented.

How big should the pulling grip be?

It must match the conductor diameter and carry a rated load above the maximum tension. A grip that is too small slips; one that is too large fails to grip evenly.

Are joints reusable?

Yes, with inspection. Check for wear, deformation and free rotation before each job and withdraw anything that shows damage.
